Talents
Description
Flourish is South Africa's premier synth-pop band, inspired by and modeled on synth-pop bands from the 80s such as Yazoo, Erasure and The Pet Shop Boys.
Performer meets producer in the form of Ken CTRL and Derek Starr. These two talents collided in 2009 to forge their unique dance-pop sound with a retro-fresh twist.
Between them, the pair have a wealth of songwriting and performing experience & achievements, including coming third in a national songwriting competition at age 14 (Derek) and time spent performing on the London club circuit (Ken).
Derek is a classically trained pianist and has been writing songs since he was in primary school. Thorough training in the performing arts complements Ken’s skills as a singer/songwriter and he has fronted various electro-pop bands (CherryCrush, Trucker) as well as performed at prominent venues in Soho and the West End (Heaven, Madame JoJo's and Metro).
Flourish's songs have aired on MFM, UJFM, Namakwa FM, KFM/Highveld Stereo, Red Cap Radio (Mr Price) and UCT Radio. They have entertained regularly at the ultra-chic La Bottega in Woodstock and have also performed at Club 121, Bubbles Bar, Beaulah Bar, Upper Eastside Hotel, Cape Town Pride, Club Voom Voom and the V&A Waterfront Ampitheatre.
These seasoned performers lent their talents to contemporary dance in 2011, appearing to critical acclaim in Alfred Hinkel's production, 'padonbekend' ('road unkown'), at the KKNK festival. Their songs provided the inspiration and soundtrack for the show.
Their hour-long live show features all 10 tracks from their self-made debut album, 'Moving Up', which delivers house, disco and club music plus their own brand of pop. Work has already begun on their 2nd album which will be out later this year. 'Moving Up' is out now!
